Aikido is practiced in partners alternating between the role of uke (the attacker) and nage (the receiver). The partners practice prearranged techniques and forms (kata). Both roles are essential to aikido. The uke learns how to stay calm and aware in difficult positions, while the nage learns to control and synthesize the attacker's energy. The aikido fall or roll is an essential skill that every uke must learn in order to avoid injury. The roll is one of the first skills taught to beginning students (Source: Wikipedia).
