Aikido ranks are divided into two categories: the kyu (white belt) and the dan (black belt). A hakama (left) is a traditional piece of samurai clothing worn with a gi (bottom). Every aikidoist trains with a gi, however hakama etiquette varies depending on the dojo (in many schools, only the black belts wear hakamas). There are 6 levels (or kyu) of white belt and 10 levels (or dans) of black belt. Members of dan levels 1-3 are known as Fuku-Shidoin (assistant instructor), dan levels 4 and 5 are Shidoin (instructor) and dan levels 6-10 are Shihan (master instructor) (Sources: Aikidoofashland and Aikidofaq).
